How to Tell If Your Home Needs Insulation?

Your home, if older that 10-20 years may be under insulated. If it is, you may experience a host of symptoms like hot and cold zones, higher energy bills and higher than normal humidity levels.

One way to visually decide if you are under insulated is to check and see if your joists are showing. A typical attic joist can be anywhere from 6 inches to 10 inches. If you can see these joists in both cases, your home is under insulated.

Insulation acts as a resistor to heat transfer. It slows heat from penetrating into your home in summer and keeps heat during winter.

Imagine having a thin jacket on a cold day. Your body heat will transfer much more quickly than if you had a thicker more insulated coat.

If you suspect your attic's coat is not thick enough, you should call a professional to help evaluate your insulation's levels and make accurate recomendations.

You can save your self the headache of high bills, discomfort and a thermally unprotected house. Over a long period of time, thermally unprotected home's can take on more moisture and systems may fail more dramatically. Sheetrock can peel, mold can form at the air ducts. This can attract pests to your home. Roaches, rats and critters like damp places.

So again, check today and see if your house is under insulated. If it is, you should call a professional immediately and schedule a free inspection and estimate. You'll be happy you did.
